Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. It is opened and processed by your own browser on this computer. Nothing is sent to us at any point, which is also why it keeps working if your connection drops after the page has loaded.
Why can't I get a video with a transparent background?
Common video formats have no way to store transparency, and the browser's video encoder does not offer it either. Green screen is the standard way around this — every editor can drop out a green background in one step.
Why is there a 30 second limit?
Every frame is matted on your own machine. Thirty seconds at 15 fps is around 450 frames, which already takes a few minutes. Longer clips would mean leaving the tab open a long while, so it is better to trim to the part you actually need.
The edges are not perfect. Can I improve them?
The model works best on a person against a background that is reasonably different from them. Even lighting and a bit of separation between the subject and what is behind them help a lot. Very fine detail like loose hair is where any automatic tool struggles.
Why is the first run slower?
The first run downloads the matting model to your browser. After that it is cached, so the next file starts straight away.
Does it work on things that are not people?
It is trained on people, so it is strongest on anyone on camera. Products held in shot usually come out well too. A complicated object on a busy background is where it is least reliable.
